Brass Band Notes.

[By •' Dbumsttcik."]

Both tiie P'alnierston and' Municipal. Bands held good:practices oh Thursday night, the' former rehearsing the programme to be submitted on "People's Day "at.the v forthcoming Manawatu Spring Show, while the M unicipal Band put in two hours' hard practice on selections for the Hastings contest next month. The latter Band has strength, ened its raukslately in various departments, for the contest, with players from the Foxton and Feilding Bands, and will thus be enabled to "contest" with a fairly strong combination. With the weak points of the Band removed, they ought to go very hear achieving victory in all the big events at Hastings. I wißh them success.

At Thursday night's meeting of the Palmerston Brass Band it was decided to play a programme of music in the rotunda next Sunday week; also, on both the first and second nights of the A. and P. Show- On the latter occasions collections will be taken up in aid of the uniform and instrument funds.

I understand arrangements have been made with Mr J. Crichton, the conductor of the Wanganui Garrison Band, to put the1 Municipal Band through their *• facings" two or three times prior to their departure for the Hastings contest. The band will undoubtedly benefit under that gentleman's able tuition while his services will, also, be appreciated by members. The band will practice, I believe, under Mr Crichton on Sunday next. The Palmerston Brass Band is negotiating in the direction of securing the services of two cornet soloists—gold medallists—to further strengthen their " lead." I sincerely hope they will be successful m obtaining these players, for as at present constituted the other portion of the band is too heavy for the soloists. Providing these two instrumentalists accept the proposals ol the band tho latter will be enabled to make a most creditable " show" in their forthcoming engagements. giThe" Municipal Band has arranged a most satisfactory programme for the sacred concert on Sunday night, and. it should meet with the support it deserves.

It is intended, I believe, for the present, at anyrate, to abandon the proposed marching competition, which was to have been held for second-class bands, on the Showground on King's Birthday, owing to several of the nominated bands now being unable to attend.
