RUSSIA AND JAPAN,
The Japanese Advance on
Liaoyans:
Bad Roads Retard Progress.
(Per Press Association—Copyright) - LONDON, May 19. The Japanese have advanced to the south of Liaoyang. They were delayed two days while awaiting their heavy artillery, which, owing to the terrible state of the roads, retarded the army. The advance was resumed on the ISth. General Oko reports that the railway had been cut in five places north of Port Arthur, between the oth and 17th inst. Hundreds of Chinese and Russian refugees from Dalny have reached Chefoo. ' They report -tmat an at. tempt was made to destroy the docks and piers at Dalny, but they were unsuccessful, though the iron pier at Talienwan was wrecked. The Japanese, on the 16th, after serious fighting, drove a battalion of Russians, with eight guns, off a line of hills at" Cfiakato to Chulisan, near Kinchau. The Russians retreated southwards.
The -Japanese casualties were 146, including nine officers wounded. General Kuropatlcin reports that there are five thousand Japanese sixteen kilometres south-east of Fenghuencheng, and mentions that smaller bodies are in the vicinity, which generally suggests that the advance is less rapid than indicated from other sources.
The Japanese are constructing fieldiyorks near Fenghuencheng.
