THE BOROUGH BY-LAWS.
Mk Thomson, S.M., is determined to put a atop to the practice of local cyclists of riding on the footpaths in the Borough. Until lately the cyclists have had mat ters much their own way, the fine? im posed by the Bench having been altogether too small to act as a deterrent. Mr Thomson has intimated very plainly that offenders will not be dealt with so leniently in future, and several have already found to tbeir cost that he will keep his word. The Magistrate is to be commended for the course he is taking. Many narrow escapes from accidents have occurred in the town through cyclists using the footpaths, and as a large number of them, particularly youths, make a practice of "scorching," it is only right they should, be made to understand that they will not be allowed to indulge in such practices at the risk of injuring other persons. As Mr Thomson remarked yesterday, cyclists will find it cheaper in future to keep off the footpaths and ride their bicycles on the read.
