Kairanga County Council

The following is the conclusion o? the business transacted at tho Kairanga County Council- yesterday :— The overseer's report upon work done during the past month and said the roads generally were in a very fair state.. Milverton and Son had not made any further progress with their metalling, contract since last meeting and had not completed the repairs to roads as requested by the Council at the last meeting.. i The overseer stated the contracj tors had done a portion of the repairs on the Jackcytowu road but had not put on the quantity of metal required by him* The chairman said there was not the slightest chance of the work being carried out this winter, but if proper energy had been shown the work could have been done.. The overseer reported there were only 500 odd yards of metal taken out of the pits as against the GOOO contracted toys, It was stated there was a sum of £151 due to the contractors and that penalties on the work totalled £9S. The opinion was expressed that the work should be completed by the Council at the contractors' expense. It was eventually decided to leave the matter with the chairman to deal with. A number of residents of the Rangitikei Line waited upon the Council and requested that the drain running, practically, in the centre of the road should be filled up and shifted alongside the fence.. With tho traction engine and mo-tor-car trailic the present state of the road was dangerous. Practically the settlers desired the summer road to be extended along the side cf the present metalled road. Crs. Manson and Bryant both.' spoke in favour of tho work being carried out, tho former suggesting that it shouldjjc placed on the estimates; 'The chairman suggested the settlers should also approach the Manawatu drainage Board and he thought the two local bodies could come to some arrangement over .the question. ■ , Speaking as a member of the Drainage Board Cr. Bryant said there was a probability if they were approached the Drainage Board might see its way to give the

land for tho work and thus help to settle the question, I The matter was left in abeyance pending waiting upon the Drainage Board; ! The deputation also objected to ! the Council declaring penny royal .as a noxious weed unless it was I also declared the same in the Manchester Road Board. Tho members of the deputation said it was no good them clearing their properties when the weed was brought down from properties above them. Tho chairman said there was no provision in the Act for objections from settlers, and they could not compel tho Manchester Road Board in the matter, but they could write to them on tho subject. The plant would be declared a noxious freed at the present meeting. The chairman also expressed surprise that anyone should object to tho proceeding, penny royal being absolutely the worst weed in existence! It made land perfectly useless. Several Councillors spoko of the injurious effect of the weed/ Cr., Bryant stating he know of a farm absolutely unsaleable owing, to the growth of tiie weed. Tho ordinary business oE the meeting was suspended and a special meeting held to declare penny royal a noxious weed. A motion Ito that effect was carried unanimously-^ I Resuming again Foreman Horn's , report was considered. Ho reported unfavourably on tho state of several bridges in the Fitzherbert ! district, tho Kahuterawa in particular being in a very rotten state; He said he would not be answerable if very heavy weights went i across it. All the stringers were \ rotten of the land span. It was decided that the necessary timber. should bo procured at once;Cr. Were reported with reference to stumping and ploughing a portion of the Bunnythorpo Domain, his report being adopted without disscntf Tho question of scrub-cutting on the Kahutorawa road was held qver till next meeting. It was decided that in future all deputations should be. received at two o'clock.A resolution fixing the rate at •Jd in the & was carried.Accounts were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
