CADET COMPETITIONS.
(to the editob.)
Sib, —In your issue ol Tuesday it is stated that an effort will be made to induce the A. and P Association to supplement the medals promised r'or the cadet competitions with a money grant of—?ay —£5. Now, this seems very undesirable. The professional spirit is alraidy too rampant among our athletes and even among school-children. The medals in themselves are a valuable and an honourable reward for merit, and the A. and P. Association does not number amongst its many functions that of contributing conside.able sums of money towards genertl school purposes. And that is precisely what such a pn_e would amount to ; for it is all moonshine to say that Campbellstreet or any other school is being put to any necessary expense over this competition. There is absolutely no expensa whatever connected with a school cadet corps—iheGovernnisiit finds everything —and the prize, if given aud won, would be devoted to general school purposes os to games and amusements —I am, etc., Ose Who JLnott g.
