TURED BY BOERS

5 Received May IS, at 9 a.m. London, May 17. When Lieut.-General French was three miles north of the Zand River, threatening the enemy's rear, Colonel Porter sent a mixed squadron, consisting of i- Scots Greys, Inniskillings, Carbineersand Australian Horse, to a hill com- { manding the Boers' flank and rear. After some opposition the British I force dismounted and examined the •' horse kraal at the summit of the hill. '• The enemy, who were hidden in en- j trenchments further along the ridge, ; fired volleys, killing some horses and j stampeding the remaindor. j j The Boers then advanced into the open in overwhelming numbers, and compelled the British squadron to retire. A number of horseless British soldiers were captured. Tho Boers robbed a few dead and looted the saddles from the horses killed. They shelled the approaching cayalry and infantry, but the Hussars charging, contributed to the ultimate retirement of the enemy.
