MAORILAND SOLDIERS.
In a lettter dated April 6th from East London, Cape Colony, and written to MrW. B.Rhodes, Trooper R, Pcrreau states that they were going up to Bloemfontcin and the tracks were readv when orders were received that they wero to embark on the 7th April for Beira.
Speaking of their life in East London the writer says :—We have had a grand time of it until now, the people of the town have been so kind. They have had a concert or a ball every night for tlie contingent. They think the world ef us ; they bring us fruit and cakes ud to the camp every day, and they pet us up like a lot of dolls.
Mr Perrau mentions that he was talking to one of the soldiers who had just arrived from the front, and he said'the first N.Z. Contingent are the pets of South Africa. They are frightened of nothing, and the Boers hate their very name.
He mentions that there is a picture stuck up in East Loudon of the first contingent charging the Boers with fixed bayonets, and the Boers are scattering in all directions, Under the picture is written " New Zealanders to the rescue."
