NEW ZEALANDERS AT THE FRONT.
(N.Z. Times.) COMPLIMENTING BRAVE
TROOPERS,
The following complimentary notice appeared in orders just prior to our joining the relief column :—
The commanding officer has the pleasure in placing on orders the conduct ] of Troopers Forsyth and Johnson, re- j ported on the 25th inst,, when on re- ( connaissance in force, when they •- assisted under fire to remount Corporal \ McKegg, and all returned in safety to their Company. It is by such actions ■ that confidence and true comradeship is built up and success ensured. He | also desires it to be known that he has ] been able to forward to Colonel Penton, Commandant New Zealand Forces, a most favourable report of all ranks, ' backed by the opinion of the General < officer commanding, and feels certain ' that no matter how long the war may. '. continue the New Zealand men will prove true to the cause they volunteered for.. .: TOMMY ATKINS' ART. A good deal of annoyance is felt by both officers and men regarding the paragraphs in some of the New Zealand papers that came to hand last: mail referring to General French's remark about the colonials swearing. lam pleased to be able to state that there is no truth whatever in the report that the General complained about our boj's swearing so much. And, further, if I may be permitted to express an opinion on the subject, I would say that our boys did not know how to swear until they "heard Tommy Atkins at the game. Though my colonial experience has brought me in close contact with bullock drivers and shepherds, I am quite sure that after hearing a good British Tommy curse, no man I had ever met had even learned the first rudiments of the art.
