The Buller river Gold Fields are progressing satisfactoraly, and large quantities of gold are in the possession of diggers. Some natives offered no less than twelve pounds weight for sale lately, and two Europeans diggers offered £2OO worth each. The best diggings are at Waimangaroha, A nugget, weighing four, ounces, six peunv-

weight was found at the river. The Buller river bed contains large quantities of gold, but it cannot be easily got at on account of the depth of the river; however there are some good claims on its banks. Gold, in payable quantities, lias been discovered at Waitakero, about 20 miles south of the Buller; and at Karamea about 50 miles north of. the Buller. The Waitakere and Karamea will admit vessels of considerable tonnage. There is sufficient available land connected with the Karamea to form a large settlement. Extracts from Mr. Blackett’s report on the Biver Grey Coal, on board the Tasmanian Maid: — Having ascertained from the engineer the usual rate of consumption of Sydney per hour, I proceeded, in conjunction with him, to compare this with the Grey coal on board, and, for this purpose, made two separate and distinct experiment. 1 :. A quantity, previously weighed, was placed in the stoke-hole and the time required to consume it was carefully noted. The state of the fires at the commencement of the trial being observed and sustained as equally as possible during the experiment. The result of both these experiments was the same namely, that four hundred weight of Grey coal lasted as long and did the same amount of work as five hundred weight of Sydney coal. This of itself is a most important fact, but another valuable quality of this coal is that it does not appear to have the slightest disposition to form clinkers, not a trace of them being observable at the end of the run either way, and the fires never having been ".pricked” or cleaned during the whole time. Mr. Charles Balme has greatly advanced with his Foundry, and is now casting pedestals for wheels of the Bun Mountain Bailway carriages, tops of stoves, cog wheels, and various portions of machinery, which, until lately, had all to be imported. The furnace fan blower is worked by horse power on machinery which has been recently introduced. Marble has been discovered by Mr. Iliggin and received by the Government, it was found in a gully in the immediate neighbourhood of Collingwood, within half-a-mile of the Aorere river, and of easy access. He describes the blocks as massive, in large quantities, and of 15 distinct varieties : pure white, yellow, amber, red, pale pink, gray, green, &c.
