MOTUEKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last Tuesday evening. Present : Fis Worship the Mayor, Mr F W Thorp, Crs Ryder, Jordan, Fry and Knapp

The minutes of the previous meeting were read. Accounts amounting to £24 ns 2d were passed for payment.

Correspondence was read as follows : From W F Cresswell, Lower Moutere, asking for use, of Council’s pile driver for a few weeks ; from the Town Clerk, Nelson, re representation

on the Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, stating that the Nelson Council has no objection to the course proposed ; from Dept of Lands and I Survey, re gravel reserve being vested |in the Council, stating that the Com missioner will attend to the matter on

his return to Nelson ; From C J Boyes, overseer, forwarding his usual monthly report ; From Sanitary Inspector ie Sanitary matters in the borough. Cr Knapp reported that the subcommittee had arranged for the fire engine to be properly looked after. Repairs had also been effected to the engine which is now ready in case of fire

The Committee’s action was approved of on the motion of Crs Jordan and Ryder.

Resolved, on the motion of Crs Jordan and Knapp, That Crs Fry and Ryder inspect the pile driving gear and if same is in good erdet- to hire it out to Mr Cresswell at ten shillings per week. It was resolved that the matter of the drain (referred to in the Overseer’s report) be left to the Works Committee to enquire into.

His Worship said he had not changed his opinion with reference to the proposal to invite the Minister of Lands to this district to give an address on the Land question. He thought the best course would be to allow the matter to lapse. This course was agreed to by the Council. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Jordan to effect a few repairs in Greenwood St.

The alterations to the Borough Bylaws were then considered. After a few further amendments had been agreed upon they were adopted. The new By laws will come into force on May Ist.

Committee inspect the pound and re port to a special meeting, to be held on the 16th inst, as to repairs needed The Clerk was instructed to sue for all outstanding rates in a fortnights time.

A discussion took place on the question of surface drainage. Cr Fry said his premises were flooded out last week and it was about time the Council attended to the culvei ts m front of Mr JManoys premises. Some people might say he had an axe to grind but he did not care for that. He wanted something done at once. Mr A I Manoy had also complained of the water but he (the speaker) had told him to write to the Council and state the grievance. Eventually it was resolved That the matter be referred to the Works Com mittee for a report. Others matters, reported elsewhere, were dealt with, and the Council rose at 10.30.
