OTAGO V. MANIOTOTO. Toe Otago team played the first match of tbeir Golifields tour sgainßt Maniototo at Ranfurly on Tuesday afternoon. A heavy rain made tbe weather most unsuitable, but despite this drawback the gams was wituesaed by a large crowd of spectators. There was a fine fast open game, but it cannot b» said tbat tbe visitors' exhibition of football was in any way sjperior to that of tbeir oppenents; in fact the local forwards rather outclassed the opposing forwards. It was evidently the intention of tbe Blues to rely on the passing of tbeir bacss, but the ball was soon too slippery for tbat phase of the game. With tha exzoption of several neat passes between two or ibrea players tbeir attempt? were soon frustrated, whils tba line passing gained no ground whatever. Mr W. C. Davis ably controlled the game, but a good many consider tbat the last penalty kick should bave been allowed over again for the opponents charging. The teams lined out as follows:

Maniototo (Reds). — Full-back, J. Hall; three-quarters, V. Bleacb, M. Churchill, L. Bleacb; five eighth?, L. Churchill, G»orge; half, W. Rutherford forwards. Pringle, dark, P. Moran, Popham, Wilson, Kippenberg, J. Morgan, Naylor (capt.) Otago (Blues).—Full-back, SpillaDe; three-quarters, Wise, Robinson, Connolly; five-eighths, Harley, Percy;half, M'Dougall (captain); forwards, Eckhoff, Scott (2), Toomas, Paterson, Findlay, Berwick, Perry.

Maniototo kicked off, fumbling by the Otago backs nearly letting them through. A mark by M'Dougall relieved, then Findiay and Paterson led the Otago forwards down the field. From the ruck Wise initiated a passing rush, the ball finally going to Robinson, who was beaten for it by Naylor. The Otago backs securing- the ball it went to Connolly, who kicked down to the local full-back who carried over bis own line. From the ensuing scrum Percy dived over the line, Spillane failing to convert, A free kick to the Radß resulted in Naylor having a fruitless shot at goal. Soon after, a second one by the same ployer equalised the score. L. Bleach knt a good chance by trying to :rop a goal instead of running. Parsing between Rutherford, Churchill and V. Bleacb, and fumb-ing by the Otago backs let Pringle pick up and score. V. Bleach's kjek failad. Pringle dashed up the line with the b2ll at lis toe, but Spillane raved. Wise led Otago into R'd territn-y twice, but the home forwards fore '6 their way back, and aft*r a good dribbling at:sck by M«ran n«d Nayler, Clarke scored. Hail failed to convert. Morgan was the next to show nut with a dnbbling rush, but Spiliane was safe. From a line out on tne Red line Wise seenred and dived over. Saott's kick failed. At half time the scores were:— Maniototo .. .. Q Otago g The Red forwards were aggres-ive at. the start of the second half, Robinson saving with a mark. Then from the ruck Percy secured, dudg d round the .-crum, and passed to Thomas, who .-cored. Paterson's kick failed. Another Maniototo forward attack looked dangerous, till Wise marked. Otago were soon after placed m a good position by Connolly following up a long kick by Paterson and cellaring th« Maniototo fuii-back. M'Dougall sent to Wise, who outpaced one opponent, side-stepped two, and scored behind the pnsts. Spillane's kick failed. Naylor then had two more free kicks for offside play by Otago, the second going over, and again equalnioE the scores. Up-and-down forward play followed, Naylor and Moran leading the Ke&, and Findlsy, Paterson and Thomas the Blues. Just on time Naylor had another shot ut goal, which missed, Tfc* game ended;—
