MANIOTOTO A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.

The annual meeting of the Maniototo A .and P. - Association was held in the County Chambers afternoon. There were about.-' 20 members present, th e attendance being fairly representative of the various parts of the district. Mr R. S. Charters, president of the society occupied the chair, and in the course of his opening remarks said he was glad to see the district so well represented at the meeting ; it showed .they took on interest in the association. Those people who did not take an interest in the show made a great mistake. Such shows brought people together, and gave them an opportunity of seeing what stock the district produced, and which were the most profitable types : to; raise. For various reasons these shows" should •> be en- ; couraged. It should be the aim to produce better stock as it was just as easy to feed a good, animal as an inferior one. The man . who produced good stock soon gained' a name and sometimes got fancy prices fronCbuyers. If they wished to make the show a success they must put their hands in their pockets. Any person who made it , practice to attend the Maniototo sales must have noticed that a better class of sheep had been bred within the last few years. MINUTES. i The minutes of last annual meeting were Tead, and confirmed on the motion of Messrs ' 3Loganiand Glendinning. - BALANCE-SHEET. The office-bearers of the society are pleased to be able in concluding the period of their stewardship to say that the society ends its year in equally as strong a position as last year, notwithstanding the complete failure of the Winter Show, which was run at a great loss. - We have assets over liabilities £lO2 14s 6d. Our liabilities are about £l7 and there is just about the same owing to the society. As you are aware we have been to a great expense in connection with the new Show Ground or we should have been in a very flourishing condition., ; Our Summer Show was a great success. The show of horses, -cattle and sheep were very much superior to any previous show. We have, to thank the judges for their eervices, and to the yard superintendent we are much indebted for his labours. The financial position of the society is due not to any virtue of the society itself but to the generosity of a large number of its staunch supporters. Those we especially thank. The Chairman moved the adoption of the xeport and balance-sheet, which was seconded by Mr Logan. Both gentlemen criticised the balance-sheet at some length and expressed the opinion that the affairs of the society were in a flourishing condition. Mr Bleach said it was a pity advantage' had not been taken of the offer made by him at last annual meeting to bear the expense of having the balance-sheet printed and .circulated amongst the members of the society. He was prepared to make the same offer for next yean Mr Logan said, .he did not think one member should bear the expense of having the balance-sheet printed,-and Would suggest that Mr Bleach apply his generosity in the direction of giving a special prize. • Mr Bleach said he would do so if the members of the society preferred.it. Mr Lightfoot -moved—That, in future the balance-sheet be printed and circulated amongst members at least a fortnight before, the date of the annual meeting.—Seconded by Mr Bleach and carried. The motion for the adoption of the balancesheet was then put and carried. COBBSSPONDENCE. Mr C G. Trotter sent in his resignation as a member of. the society. Moved by Mr Logan, and seconded by Mr Weir—That Mr Trotter's resignation be accepted with regret, as he had been a good supporter of the society. A letter was received from Mr J. Law, jun., expressing the opinion that the society should take notice of some remarks of the Mayor of Naseby on the occasion of the Winter Show-concert. The writer expressed his own opinion somewhat forcibly. After discussion it was decided that the letter be not received. • ELECTION Oi? OFFICE-BEABEBS. Mr Charters in vacating the chair briefly returned thanks for the hearty support that had been given him during his. term of office. Mr B. F. Inder mored and Mr Herdman seconded—That Mr Charters retain the chair 'till his success ir.ife appointed.—Carre I. For the position of chairman several gentlemen declined nomination, Mr R. F. Jnder being amongst the number, but upon pressure being brought to bear he consented to accept the position, and took the chair. Mr Logan referred to the fact-thai the late Mr Walter Inder was the first chairman of a

Manidtoto A.' and Pi Aspaiatiorr, an I expressed the opinion that the: position formerly held by the father W3uld be honourably filled by the son. The following oUce-boarers were then elected. Mr Bleach moved, and Mr Gossage seconded—That an advertisement be inserted in the newspaper calling for applications for; the position of secretary, at the same remuneration as given last year ; such applications to be dealt with by the committee. Mr Logan moved as an amendment— That Mr Dow be re-appointed secretary at r the same remuneration. On a vote being taken the motion was carried. ' v • Mr Lightfoot said as he was the executive officer who had been brought into closest contact with Mr Dow, he should like to say a few words of appreciation of the manner in which he had carried out Ma duties. He had been if anything far too conscientious in bis work, and often did himself what he should make others do. In the coarse of the past few months he had had to come to Naseby no less than half a dozen times in the discharge of his duties. NOTICES OF MOTION. Mr Charters gave notice of his intention •to move that Rule 8, which provided for the annual election of officers, be amended by deleting the word " secretary." Mr Herdman gave notice that he intended to move that Rule 6,-which provided that the committee consist of 24 members, be amended by the addition of the words "or more " after members. YARD SUPERINTENDENT. On the motion of Messrs Logan and C. J. Inder, Mr Bleach was appointed yard superintendent. DATE OF SHOW. Oh the motion of Mr C. J. GROUND'S COMMITTEE, Mr Herdman proposed, Mr P. M., Law seconded, and it' was carried That the Grounds Committee consist of Messrs Weir, Charters, Forrester, Bleach, Dow, Calder and Logan. A SPECIAL TBAIN. On the suggestion of Mr Herdman it was decided to request the Railway Department to", run a special train from Dunedin to Ranfurly and back on Show Day ; also that the member for the district be approached with a view to obtaining hia assistance. Mr Logan pointed out that any difficulty could be got over by attaching a special carriage to the goods train and by delaying its departure from Ranfurly till 5 o'clock. A NEW BOLE. Mr Lightfoot moved—That any person donating a special prize of one guinea or more to the' funds of the society Bhall be elected an hoa. member for that year, and shall be entitled to all the privileges of a member.—Carried. WINTER SHOW. A long, discussion, took place on the question of abandoning the Winter Show for the present. Some members thought such a course advisable in the interests of the society, while otherß were strongly of the contrary opinion. The strongest supporter of the Show was Mr Moss, who moved—That it be an instruction to the committee to take into consideration whether it is advisable to carry on the Winter Show or not, and report to next meeting. Mr Glendinning seconded the motion, and suggested that in the event of the committee deciding to report against-the Winter Show, they should consider whether it is not ad visable to have classes at the Summer Show for butter, poultry, &c. Messrs Logan, Herdman, Gossage, and j R. F. Inder spoke in favour of abandoning i the winter show for the present, while i Messrs Calder and Moss thought it would be better to continue it even at a small loss. the latter pointing out that it would be useless to include classes for poultry, &c., in the summer show programme as it was the wrong season for a fowl show and they had not the necessary buildings at Ranfurly. Mr Gossage moved', and Mr Herdman seconded as an amendment—That a Winter Show be not held. " - On being put to the meeting the amendment was carried. Mr Lightfoot moved and Mr Logan seconded—That should a committee be formed in Naseby to hold a winter show under the auspices of this association, a sum of £5 be voted towards it. After a deal of discussion the motion was lost. ■"■■•' THANKS. The meeting concluded with votes of thanks to the chair and. the retiring treasurer and auditor.
