MINING NOTES.
Gold discovery and mining advance in New Guinea —Gold was first found there in payable quantities seven years ago. About eight months ago Sir W. Macgregor discovered gold on the North-east Coast, close w German territory, and now gold is found in the South Ciiast, thus encouraging a hope that it will l>e found between these two points. Sixty Europeans are employed in gold-mining, and one or two tribes of Natives ■iave takeo to the shove! and cradle. A number of Chinamen are making from 7s 6d to 20s a day on the beaches of the 0 utha. A small prospecting steam dredge will 'iknly be placed shortly on the Clutha, to work the east bank from Cromwell up to Lowhurn. Hyde and party got 20oz laat week, and it\e. Enterprise 320z Bdwt 6grs, The construction at Alexandra of the Victoria current wheel dredge has begun. Fuiir applications for mining leases in the Xarori Reservoir reserve, close to the city, iave been made to the Wellington Council. The prospectors think they have itruck a .-eef yielding 2cz t<i the ton.
