Manawatu Herald FRIDAY, JULY 16, 1937. LOCAL AND GENERAL.
For several weeks past the surface of' the road across the swamp section of the highway at Whirokino has been in . a very rough state, and the day. spread upon it by the Public Works employees lias not tendered to improve matters. On Wednesday, however, a commencement was made' with reconstructing the surface with a scarifier and grader and a big improvement is expected. Although the work of. building up the long embankment north of the Whirokino Bridge has been practically completed, it is understood that little -further progress can be made with the deviation on the Levin-Foxton main highway until more materials are to hand to allow a commencement upon building the trestle bridge across the flood area. To date 'some nine tons of steel reinforcing rods have been landed' at Foxton, to be used in making the concrete piles.. , The margin of safety on the wooden bridges on the WellhigtonLevin main highway has been increased considerably pf recent weeks by the wire netting which has been laid on the decking. The netting, of about 11 inch mesh, practically eliminates the danger of skidding on the former slippery surfaces. Netting is at present being laid on the Otaki Bridge, and when this work is completed the Main Highways Board employees will give their attention to the Ohau Bridge. No doubt the Whirokino Bridge, which has been the scene of several accidents due to skidding, will receive similar Attention.
