BONNET CAUGHT IN WfIRE,

As a sequel to a strange accident .n Avhieh a child, Barbara Ann Wright, of Fernhill, HaAvke’s Bay, tAVo years of age, suffered injuries from which she died in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Hastings, on Sunday afternoon, an inquest A\ r as opened on Tuesday before Mr G. Ebbett, J.P., district coroner. It Avas stated that Avhile the little girl Avas playing on a rubbish heap beside a wire fence the top of her Avoollen bonnet caught in one of the wires. Slipping from the heap, she

was suspended in such a way that the bonnet strings tied under her chin, inflicting injuries which are presumed to have been the cause of her death six days later. The father of the child,. Frank William Wright, gave evidence, but the mother Avas not in a fit State to be called. The inquest was, therefore, adjourned sine die. The coroner remarked that- there Avere some singular features in the case, but nothing that Avas in ariy way suspicious.

The father said he last saw the child Avhen he left home at one o’clock on Monday of' last week. At about 2.15 p.m. a farm hand Avent over and told him to return home at once. Witness returned to the house and found his Avife and child missing. About half an hour afterwards he received a message from the hospital saying that his child was there. He did not go to the hospital that evening and his Avife returned home that afternoon. As the result of what his wife told him he Avent to see the child at the hospital the next day. Witness could not say iv-hat was the cause of his child’s death. She had been in her usual good health. She had never had any illness apart from Avhooping cough, from Avhieh she*AV|is suffering slightly Avlien he last saAv her at home.
