FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Reports were read and dealt with as follows: — ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman (Mr A. G. Huntley) imported that during the month the road staff had been engaged in. patching ruts in No. G Line, Avenue and Moutoa Rds.; Hall'and Whyte Sts. (prior to patching these sections of road were all picked up). Grading work has been earned out in Duncan and Robinson Sts., Avenue and Moutoa Rds; noxious weeds were grubbed on Council sections, and in Avenue Rd., and Whittaker St.; reserve plots mown and general maintenance work a ttended to. Shoidders were now being constructed along Russell St. boundai’y section. This length was picked up qnd reformed during the month and is being kept up to highway standard width. ■

Cr. J. L. Christie asked that some attention be given to the metal road leading off Johnston St. into Coley St., which was badly pot-holed. He also asked that Coley Street footpath be cleaned up. Cr. J. R. Middleton complimented, the road foreman on the excellent job he had made of the top end of Russell Street.

The report was adopted, it being decided to draw the foreman’s attention to 'Cr. Christie’s request. WATERWORKS REPORT.

The waterworks foreman (Mr W. D. Neville)' reported as follows: — During the month the staff was engaged in fencing borough sections, cleaning noxious weeds and levelling Victoria Park. At the station 1,225,000 gallons of yyater was pumped, 'the maximum current used being 32 amps. —Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: —• From the Horowhenua Rugby Union, forwarding a cheque for £2 14/-, being ten per cent, of the total gate takings (£26 18/-) at Easton Park during the past rugby season, as rent of the reserve. — Received. ' • From the Manawatu Automobile Association agreeing to shifting a road sign at the intersection of Park and Robinson Streets.—Received. - • _ 1 From the Valuer-General notifying that a subsidy and rebate had been authorised in respect of lands used for farming purposes. The Mayor was deputed to certify to the accuracy of the details contained in local applications and it was decided that application for - the subsidy be made* forthwith. The Clerk reported that local benefit would amount to £IOB odd. From Mr A. Ross, complaining about the state of the road in Thynne Street.—Noted for attention.

TRAFFIC ACCIDENT PREVEN TION.

The Commissioner of Transport Avrote acknoAvledging receipt of the Council’s letter in which it was stated that the Council desired to co-operate in the mattey of traffic accident. prevention but could not permit of any extension in traffic control. The Commissioner stated that Avhen motor legislation Avas first introduced, the Government realised that some contribution should be made toAvards the cost of controlling 1 traffic and arranged accordingly for commission on heavy traffic fees, drivers’ license fees, and fines for all offences to be paid direct to each local authority. It must be admitted that this revenue is a substantial contribution towards that cost. It Avas suggested that the Council approach the ManaAvatu County Council Avith a view to joining the group of local bodies employing Inspector Berry. The letter Avas received. GENERAL. Miss J. Elhyood notified her resignation as librarian. It was decided to call applications to fill the vacancy. It Avas decided that a special meeting of The Council be held on Monday, 18th November, for' the purpose of dealing Avith loan conversion proposals. It Avas decided that ten per cent, be added to all rates unpaid by 4 pan. on Friday, 20th December. After some discussion, it Avas decided to rejoin the Municipal Association. The subscription is £4 per annum.
