The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meeting opened in fine Aveather at Christchurch on Saturday. The attendance was large and the totalisator investments amounted to £41,341 (win: £16,547, place: £24,794) as compared Avith £36,322 last year. Cuddle Avon the 'Cup event Avithout much effort.
The Aveather Avas fine, but dull and cold, and the tracks soft and slow after steady rain through the night, Avhen the meeting was continued yesterday. The attendance was good, and the totalisator ,investmentS were £28,997 10/- (win), £1,2,695 10/- (place), as against £22,451 for seven races last year, an increase of £6456.
The Wanganui-OAvned and Ha-. Avera trained colt Lowenberg won the NeAV Zealand Derby in one of the most closely-run 'races seen in this classic event, and in the sloAvest time ever recorded AApth one exception, Rossini’s win in 1919. Although the track was soft and sloav, this did not account solely for the poor time recorded, the jockeys being content to let the pace be a hard canter for the first mile, then with thf favourite Kin-, noull, badly placed, the race Avas AA’on before he could extricate himself. It Avas a sensational finish, anjl LoAvenberg’s win Avas a great to most backets, Avho regarded Ivinnoull as unbeatable.
