FIRST RUGBY GAME
AN EVENT AT DARWIN
A game of Rugby football played in Darwin, Australia, the other day was, in the memory of residents, the first game of the code ever completed in (Darwin. Many years ago, Rugby was attempted, but, owing to the tropical climate and the flint-like nature of. the ground, so many players retired with injuries that the games had to be abandoned. The recent game, which was between the town and the garrison of the Royal Australian Artillery, was completed without any injuries more serious than skinned knees and elbows. (Before the game players walked over the oval picking up hundreds of stones and throwing them off the field. The game was won by the town team, who have styled themselves “The Wallabies.” The Rugby organisation which was formed in Darwin recently allows play under the rules of either Rugby Union or Rugby League.
