GAOL FOR BOOKMAKER.
“MAN WITH LARGE CONNECTION.”
Christchurch, November 9,
Walter Ahfeld, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment by Mr H. A. Young, S.M., this morning on a charge of keeping a common gaming-house at 107 Worcester Street. The charge followed a police raid. Ahfeld had been twice previously convicted. The magistrate said that he was a bookmaker on a large scale. The mgistrate added: “The accused’s premises have been used as a betting bouse. He had been previously fined £SO in 1931 and £75 in 1932 for similar offences. According to the police he has been a bookmaker for eight years with a large connection. The bets he had taken up to 9.30 a.m. amounted to £l2. To fine him under such circumstances would be merely imposing an additional tax on his income derived from an illegal business.”
Ahfeld had nothing to say and sentence was imposed.
