AFTER-DANCE CAR SMASH.
ONE KILLED; FIVE INJURED
Auckland. November 4.
One man was killed and five others were seriously injured when an open touring car plunged through the railing of a one-car bridge on a. bend of the road from Albany to Auckland at 12.30 this morning.
The occupant of the car who was killed was Michael Stipich, 19 years of age, of Devonport. The other five occupants all received concussion and all are in a serious condition. They are Richard Powell, 25, single; Noel Langton, 25, single; John Cogan, 20; James McGregor, 18; and Devonport Ross Jones, 16, all of Devonport. The six young men had been attending a dance at Albany, and were returning home toward Devonport. The car hit the left-hand railing of the bridge and plunged 30 feet, into the creek below. It came to rest upside down.
Two of the men were thrown clear and the others were pinioned under the car, hut fortunately at the time there was only a few inches of water in the creek. Medical attention was obtained and a special ferry boat was chartered to take the injured men to Auckland Hospital.
