BOYS WITH DETONATORS.
CHILD’S HAND SHATTERED
BABY’S NARROW ESCAPE. The possession of detonators by children at Victoria Valley, near Kaitaia, on Thursday afternoon, resulted in the 10-year-old son of Mr E. Panther severely injuring his left hand. Unaware of danger, the boy exploded a detonator with a cracker, half the thumb, the whole of the first finger and part of the second finger of the left hand being blown off. Ht was admitted to the Kaitaia. Hospital, but his condition is not serious. 'The small son of Mr Norman Kitchen also obtained a detonator, which be placed in a fuel box. Later the detonator was shovelled accidentally into the stove, the resulting explosion blowing the front of the stove to pieces. No one was injured, although a few moments before the explosion a baby had been beside the stove. Another boy was found in possession of a detonator by bis uncle, who immediately took charge of the article. The police are investigating the matter, as it is alleged the detonators were distributed among the children by a Maori boy.
