KEEPING FIT.
Writing in the Times, a doctor says: “Keeping Fit” must mean that muscles and joints are kept in good condition and this cannot be accomplished hy picnics, sun-bath-ing, or by occasional hiking, swimming, and cycling. It can only be done by systematic daily exercise which for people of sedentary life is best taken in the form of physical culture under the direction of a doctor. I fear that my profession has not given the attention it deserves to this matter. To the middle-aged otherwise healthy, but just arriving at the stage when they are inclined to become physically lazy, a prescription of regular exercise may mean salvation. In order to be able to give such a prescription the doctor must know all about physical culture as well as the effects of various sports and games on the muscles and joints. Knowing so much he will be able to prescribe exercise with as much care as to detail as he would give to the regulation of diet or the administration of insulin in the ease of a diabetic.
