ENGLISH SILVER COINS

PERIOD OF LEGAL TENDER ENDS ON FEBRUARY 1. A proclamation published in this week’s Gazette declares that English silver • coins will not be legal tender in. the Dominion after February 1 next. The Minister of Finance, Mr. Coates, states that the proclamation represented a. further step in the change to New Zealand silver coin. As every one was aware, for some months past New Zealand silver coin had been on issue; and the withdrawal by the banks of English and Australian coins in circulation had been proceeding steadily and methodically. Australian silver coin had never been legal tender in New Zealand, but large amounts of it had crept into circulation and had been genex-ally accepted. It was hoped that by next February there would be very little English coinage in circulation. The Minister asked shopkeepers and the public generally to assist the change to New Zealand silver coinage by promptly lodging or exchanging all English and Australian silver cqip that came into their ■possession at a branch of any bank. Mr. Coates said the prohibition on the export of silver coin would be rigorously maintained permanently, so that no one could hope to profit by hoax-ding English silver coin. ,
