BEACH POST OFFICE.

(To the Editor). Sir, —Quite a lot has been said in and out of the Chamber of Commerce regarding the Beach postal service and many thanks are due to one resident for the improvement we now enjoy. There is room for still further improvements, however. This afternoon at 4.30 I called at our Post Office to find the door locked. On going into the store, and asking for a stamp for a letter, I was told by the Postmaster that the box had been cleared, so the letter could not have the stamp cancelled, and put up for delivery that day. This letter would have to go into the letter box in the ordinary way, be collected at 9.30 the following morning, leave the Beach for Foxton Post Office at 10 a.m., return in the afternoon mail, and be handed to the addressee — a little more than 24 hours after it is posted—lo feet away. Is this a matter of Jlred tape” or official blundering? Another weakness in our postal service is that postal notes are not available here. We are obliged to spend 2/- return fare to Foxton Post Office, or ask our neighbours, friends, yor storekeepers to get one for us. Rowley Hai’t is most obliging and good nattired, and would get what we need, without asking a cent for his trouble, but certain persons do not approve of any postal business being transacted by any but the postmaster or staff. Any person wishing to avail themselves of cheap telephone rates after 8 p.m. must pay one shilling extra to open the Post Office which closes at 5 p.m. A charge 6f sixpence is made for a ’phone call to Foxton during office hours. 4There is room for many improvements still and I trust an abler pen than mine will take this matter up.—l am, etc.,

A. E. ASTON. Manawatu Heads, 30/10/34.
