HARBOUR BOARD RENTS.

COLLECTOR TO BE APPOINTED The matter of outstanding rents, raised at last meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board came in for considerable discussion yesterday. A letter was read from the Audit Office drawing the Board’s attention to its comment included in the certificates enfaecd on the balancesheet for the year ended September 30th, 1933, viz.: “In the opinion of the Audit Office the amount of the outstanding rent is excessive.” A report was read from the local committee which had gone into the outstanding rent question and in it was embodied a recommendation that the Board appoint a debt collector.

The secretary submitted a statement which showed that rents outstanding to date amounted to £679 2/6. which included rent for two large reserves. Mr P. W. Goldsmith said that the figure was only £ls more than it was last year, and, the year previous to that it had been in the vicinity of £487. He wondered why the Audit Office had not drawn the attention of the Board to the matter last year. Comparing the rents received it was shown that £593 had been collected this year against £466 last year and £3Bl for the year prior to that. The Chairman: We are receiving increased rents now.

Mr Goldsmith: Nevertheless, the position is not as bad as appears at first sight. It was decided that, one of the lessees be given fourteen days’ notice to pay up over-due rent and failing that to vacate the property, while a debt collector was appointed to take over the collection of over-due accounts.
