THE PORT OF FOXTON.
WHARF A PAYING PROPOSITION. At yesterday’s meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board, Air F. C. Railkes presented some illuminating figures in connection with the working of the port of Foxton. “From time to time,” he told members in presenting his statement, “disparaging remarks have been made against the port and now that the secretary has presented his accounts for the year just ended, it is perhaps opportune to make an analysis of the figures contained: in the balance-sheet and find out just what they disclose. An analysis of the income and expenditure account for the year discloses the exact position with regard to the working of the port. Taking income from shipping alone and offsetting expenditure solely in connection with shipping, the net result is that shipping alone last year contributed £606 10/4 towards supplying the Board’s interest. This figure represents clear profit from shipping and surely presents an unanswerable argument in favour of the retention of the port. Air. H. Osobrne: And the figure quoted can be increased. Last year was by no means a, record. The Chairman (Mr J. A. Nash) suggested that Air Raikes should prepare a full statement in connection with the port and the benefits to he derived from patronising it and this he agreed to do and present to the annual meeting next month.
