THE BEACH MAIL SERVICE.
IMPROVED SERVICE FfQW OPERATING. I/A. ON TRIAL ONLY. ' In an endeavour to obtain improved postal facilities at Manawa;tu Heads, Mr A. Alsop brought up the matter of agitating for a „bet- . ter men t of the existing service at the last meeting of the - Foxton Chamber of Commerce aiid, resulting from correspondence-from theChamber, the Acting-Postmaster (Mr F. C. Brady) was in attendance at Thursday night’s'meeting. Mr Brady stated that he hjad conferred with Mr Hodge, the eh mail contractor with a view, to endeavouring to have an improved service effected and Mr Hodge had agreed to carry an extra mail each way daily, free of charge. As a result Beach residents now had an opportunity of sending letters away hv the mails leaving Foxton at 3 p.m. daily, which connected with both north and south expresses. This extra Beach mail closed at the Beach Post Office at 1.30 p.m. daily and letters posted by it- were delivered in Christchurch or Auckland the following morning. Unfortunately, however, since the inauguration of the new service little advantage had been taken of it, while it was alleged that mail was being brought into Foxton Post Office from another source. If this was the case, and unless there was some definite improvement before long the new service would be cancelled and Beach residents would have to be satisfied with the old time-table.
Mr Alsop thanked the ActingPostmaster for the arrangements he had made and expressed the hope that Beach residents would appreciate the new service and not allow its cancellation through lack of support. The thanks of the Chamber were accorded Mr Brady for his activities and appreciation was expressed at Mr Hodge’s generosity in carrying the two additional mails * free of charge.
