CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

BT- MONTOLY MFETING

The bi-monthly : meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’s rooms on Thursday evening, presided over by Mr I*. C • Koikes (President). Also present were Messrs D. Christie, Jim. Ross, C. T’ntty, A. Alsop, W. R. McKenzie P. Bradv, J. F. Riches, W. Rob- , on, M. E. Perrcau. R. N. Spoil's, j. Shorthouse, E. W. Thane, G. F. Smith, and the secretary (Mr R. O. TTornblow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. K. TTornblow and W. Trueman. PAYMENT OF PENSIONS. A letter was received from the Minister of Pensions in reply to

Ibe proposal advanced by the Chamber to the effect that pensions should he paid by registered post, to the effect that such a procedure

would be impossible. The Postmaster (Mir IV. McKenzie) said that it would he absolutely impossible to put such a proposal into operation. In Foxton alone, he said, there were 300 pensions paid out through the Post Office and to expect these to be delivered liv registered post would no only ho cumbersome hut impraetie able.

PRIVACY AT PORT OFFICE COUNTER IMPOSSIBLE. Correspondence was read from the Acting Postmaster, Foxton, and Iho Chief Postmaster, relative to the Chamber’s request for the erection of a glass partition on the counter at the local Post Office to give some measure of privacy to persons transacting money order business. The replies indicated that it would not he possible to accede to the request owing to the staffing arrangements locally. There was only one clerk on duty at a time and it was essential that lie should have an unobstructed view of the whole counter. The Acting Postmaster (Mr F. C. Brady) stated that if anyone desired more privacy than was at present afforded at the local Post Office, such business could always he done in the Postmaster’s office. SUBSCRIPTION LEVY.

A notice of motion proposed, by the President to the effect that the subscription be reduced from 7/6 to 5/- created some discussion. Mr J. S. Shorthouse seconded the motion, and in doing so, said that he felt sure the reduction would be the means of increasing the Chamber’s financial membership. An amendment by Messrs Christie and Jno. Ross, to the effect that the membership remain as at Tiresent until the next annual meeting, but new members be admitted on payment of 5/- until the end of the current year, found favour, however and was carried. MONTHLY MEETINGS. Mr Tuttv moved the following notice of motion: “That in future the Chamber meet monthly instead of bi-monthly.” Mr Raikes seconded. After a brief discussion the motion was held over until the next meeting. FOX TON - LEVI N SERVICE. A suggestion that Foxton would he better served if the Levin-Fox-ton service ear met the Napier express instead of Fields was discussed. Arguments in favour of the change were that travellers would not have to leave Wellington until 9.33 a.m. instead of 8.20 a.in., that they would be able to travel on an express instead of a slow train, and reach Levin only half an hour Inter than at present. (Mr E. W. Thane said that if the contractor had to wait another half an hour it would mean that the mails would he delayed by that time '■ and they were already late

enough.. Mr Christie: Any delay wot

mean that the connection with the Foxton-Palmerston charabanc service would he missed. The Transport Board would have to be approached. Mr Perrcau: If the Foxton-Levin car arrived in Levin ten minutes earlier we might bo able to get the Ancfkilnnd Limited to stop. Mr Thane: will never get that. Levin has tried enough! Mr Tuttv: It would cease to he a “limited” if any more stops are

put in. It was decided that if would n he in the best interests to agita for any alteration to the existii time-table.
