CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS.
SCENES OF SPLENDOUR
Melbourne, October 16. 1 Scenes of splendour day and night are promised for the official opening of the centenary celebrations on Thursday by the Duke. His Royal Highness lands at Port Melbourne at 1.30 p.m. and Avill proceed along the sea front to St. Kilda, then to the city via St. Kilda Road, which is expected' to be lined Avith hundreds of thousands of people. The opening ceremony on Parliament House steps at 3.30 Avill be attended by Federal and State Members of Parliament, judges in robes, and brilliantly uniformed navy, army and air force officers. The Duke’s first official act in Victoria will be to declare the celebrations open. Promptly at 8 p.m. the city streets Avill blaze Avith lights, Avhen special illuminations on 8000 poles and nylons Avill be sAvitehed on. Festoon of lights Avill he reflected in the River Yarra from the lower spans of the Princes’ Bridge and fairy lights will gleam through the trees in Collins St, A spectacular display of fire-works has been arranged on the Yarra hanks, when a great map of Victoria bearing the word 'Welcome” will soar across the siky.
