FAMOUS LINER FOR SALE.
FORMER OCEAN RECORD
The liner Empress of France, pioneer of “round the world”, cruises, once holder of an ocean record and, during the War, an auxiliary cruiser, is for sale. The announcement comes at the end of three years’ idleness, during which the ship has been laid up in the Clyde, and is a direct result of the popularity of the other Canadian Pacific liners which have superseded her.
Launched in 1913 as the Alsatian, the life of the Empress of France ever since her maiden voyage, was more than usually eventful. She was requisitioned at the beginning of the War as an armed merchant cruiser, and set to patrol the North Atlantic. During the next three years she was the Hagship of three admirals, steamed, over 250,000' miles, and intercepted some 15,000 ships. Reconditioned and renamed Empress of France, the vessel relumed to the Atlantic service, and in August, 1920, lowered: the record between Quebec and Liverpool, a few months afterward lowering that for the round voyage. In 1923 she went on a cruise round the world.
