FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING . The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last evening. Reports were read and dealt with as follows: — WATERWORKS FOREMAN’S REPORT. The waterworks foreman (Mr W. D. Neville) reported that during, the month his staff had been engaged in levelling Victoria Park, planting willows in Robinson’s bend on the river bank, and attending to general maintenance work. At the pumping station 1,450,000 gallons of water was pumped. —Adopted. ROAD FOREMAN’S. REPORT.

The road foreman (Mr A.s G. Huntley), reported as follows : During the month the road staff has been engaged in patching ruts in Purcell, Whyte, and Liddell Sts.-, No. 6 Line, Avenue Rd., and Ravensworth Place; carting clay from ‘Victoria Park; grabbing noxious weeds on. council section in Purcell St.; grading Duncan, Robinson and Francis Sts.; and Norbitin and Moutoa Rds.; patching the breaks in the bitumen surface in Lady’s Mile and Union St.; discharging coal at the gas works and attending to general maintenance. A further supply of Colfix has been ordered and when this comes to hand breaks in the bitumen surface in Russell and Johnston Sts., and Norbiton Rd. rail be repaired. —Adopted. GENERAL. The Clerk reported that' during .the month Government auditors had inspected the Council’s books and vouchers which were now audited to date. The Levin. Borough Council wrote accepting the Council’s offer of £35 per annum for health service. The Clerk reported that Mr. Guinan had accordingly taken o\ ei his duties on October Ist. The Council passed a resolution expressing appreciation of the services of "Mr B. Read during the time he had carried out his duties as health officer. Mr. Guinan was ' formally appointed as local health officer. Mrs E. Ebbett wrote asking the Council to contribute towards the cost of replacing and painting a bridge giving access to her property in Johnston Street. The Mayor said that the Council could not assist in such matters. Property owners had to provide their own access. The request was declined. The Manawatu Air Race Centenary Committee wrote ' asking for financial assistance in connection with the Manawatu entry. The Mayor said that before Councillors considered complying with the request he would like them to refresh their mind's as to the state of the Council’s finances. The Council had a large overdraft and outstanding l'ates amounted to a considerable sum.

Cr. J. L. Christie: I move that the letter be received. If the Council has any money to give away let it donate a trophy to the Foxton United Sports Association. It will certainly get some return for its outlay in that direction as the Association is a means of bringing money into the town. , ICSr. Barron, while agreeing with the latter portion of Cr. Christie’s remarks, said that he did not agree with merely receiving the letter. He thought .that the Council should explain its position to the committee and wish it success with its entry. This was agreed to by Or. Christie, who amended his motion accordingly. The Kairanga County Council wrote forwarding a cheque for £3/ 8/6, being the Council’s share of traffic fees. —Received. Correspondence was received from the Palmerston North Hospital Board relative to its financial position and dispensation of charitable aid.

The Common Seal was affixed to the conveyance of section 29 Avenue Road to Mr W. Kirkland.

Literature concerning the proposed school boys Royal visit tour was received.

The Mayor extended an invitation to Councillors and Council employees to attend a church service in All Saints’ Church on the 28th inst.

Cr. Christie asked that the conveniences in the Town Hall be made available to those using the Town Hall supper-room. —Agreed to. The opening date for the Alunicipal swimming baths was left in the hands of the Clerk. The date will probably be fixed for the first week in November.
