MOUTOA DRAINAGE BOARD.

RECONSTRUCTION MAIN DRAIN FLOODGATES TO BE ABANDONED. A special mooting of the Moutoa Drainage Board was held on Saturday to consider the rccantruction and widening of the Main Drain floodgates and for drain cleaning work. The meeting was presided over by Mr -T. Chrystnll (chairman). Also present were Turstees \Y. E. Barber, B. G. Gower, D. Purcell, and the secretary (Mr G. V. Fraser). Air 11. V. Bond (Board's engineer) Avas also in attendance. An apology for absence was received from Mr \Y. S. Carter (Palmerston North). The Secretary reported that no tender had been received for the work of widening and reconstructing the Main Drain floodgates. Afr Bond said the general impression amongst (lie contractors who had looked at the job Avas that the season Avas too far advanced to unodrtakc the work. It Avould take at least five Aveeks to c-arry the workout if undertaken. Ahe matter of undertaking the A\orlk by day labour avus debated, but oAving to the lateness of the season it avas decided against this proposal. On the suggestion of the engineer it Avas decided to hold the proposal over until next year, but to immediately proceed with the Avork of remedying the leaks in the gates as outlined by Air Bond. DRAIN CLEANING, der of Messrs Aden Bros, and WestIt Avas decided to accept the tenwood of 4/11 per chain for the cleaning of the Diagonal Drain Avitli the stipulation that the portion of: drain between Main Drain and the syndicate block be cleaned first. The tenders of Mr Erl or of 4/3 per chain for Dr. Wall’s outlet drain, and 7/6 per chain for Knri Kari North avctc accepted, Avork not to commence before March 23rd. The tender of Air H. Hutchins for cleaning Langley’s North at 5/nnd Langley’s South, including Seifert's, at 4/6, Avere accepted, work not to commence before Alareli 23rd. The tender of Mr D. Sntherley of 7/- per chain avus accepted for the Alile Drain, work not to commence before March 23rd. A letter Avas received from Messrs limes and Oakley on behalf of Mr F. S. Easton (Moutoa), again protesting against the state of the Diagonal drain, and asking that the Board obtain an expert’s opinion in regard to the leaks in the Alain Drain floodgates. The letter also pointed out that Air Easton avus vi.ling to co-operate witli the Board in any reasonable way. The Chairman said lie had inspected (he Diagonal Drain, and it Avas admittedly had Avitli regard to water grass, but lie did not see any swangrass there. Trustee Barber said the drain had been cleaned and deepened between a foot and eighteen inches last year, hut the groAVth in it today Avould certainly lead anyone to believe that it had not been cleaned. The Board had proof to Ihe contrary, hoAvever. The letter avus received.
