PERIOD EXTENDED FOR NO. 5 SCHEME. “The Unemployment Board’s scheme 5 is proving so successful from the point of vioAV of the relief of unemployment, and from that of the local bodies of (be Dominion,” stated the chairman of the board, Hon. S. Cf. Smith, at Wellington on Thursday, “that the board has decided to alloAV it to continue in operation until the end of April. This method of anticipating possible needs in the way of work for the unemployed has the endorsement of most competent authorities in England, America, and on the Continent, and the Unemployment Board intends to invite the local bodies of the Dominion to submit proposals overing work three years in act- \ a nee of their usual schedule. “The encouragement of reproductive or pai'tly-reproductive Avork in rural areas is hoav being planned by the board, such schemes as getting returned soldiers’ abandoned farms back into profitable production, clearing, sub-diA'ision, and development of CroAvn lands, clearing of noxious Aveeds lands,suitable for development, etc., being included in the plans. “The board is specially concerned in the provision of Avork during the Avinter, and it is hoped that particulars Avith regard to this will be announced later.”
