JUNIOR KNOCK-OUT. FOXTON (8) v. SHANNON (3). Foxton and Shannon juniors met in the knoc'k-out competition on the racecourse on Saturday, and after a somewhat ragged display the home team won by two tries (one converted) to a goal from a penalty. The home team was made up of several from the third-grade team. Shannon was also without the services of one or two from .their ranks. The visitors had much the advantage in weight, but this was counterbalanced in the home side by nippiness and the ground suited them. At times the play inclined to be rough and a player from each side was placed oil the line for “scrapping.” put Foxton on the defence and compelled them to force during the opening stages. Thompson opened Foxton’s attacking movement by a. strong run and shortly after Huff sent out a low pass to Broad who was tackled in the attempt to get away. Up and down play ensued until Hirini sent Huff away and again received from Huff but was grassed when cutting in. Thompson stemmed a red attack with a mark. The reds came back and had a shot at goal from a penalty and Mason missed the objective by inches. Thompson broke away along the line to the centre, and yellows attacked in red’s 25. Procter and Newth gained some ground, but off-side play gave the reds relief. Foxton continued to attack, and several of the backs handled, Huff and Thompson finalising, the latter topping off by crossing well out. Huff failed with the kick. Foxton 3 —Shannon nil. Hirini sent a pass out to Huff, who transferred low to Thompson who failed to gather the oval. Huff sent out to Broad, who was beautifully grassed almost on the line, and Foxton battled to get. over. Huff whipped the ball out to Thompson, who got over, buKwas recalled for a forward pass. Again Foxton’s off-side play spoilt a splendid opening, and tlie spell ended without further score.

Foxiton attacked on opening, and the Anderson brothers were prominent. After an exchange of kicks and cross play, Shannon livened up and put Foxton on the defence, and a mark gave Foxton relief. Play now yvas ragged, both sides seeming to tire. Shannon penned Foxton in and a free kick eased Die red pressure. Ross was penalised for offside play play, and Mason landed a splendid goal from Just inside the 25. Shannon 3 —Foxton 3. Play fluctuated for a time until Thompson secured, and warding off his opponents, streaked along the line and scored in a handy position. Huff made no mistake with the kick, and the game ended shortly after, Foxton-B—Shannon 3. Mr Kohiki controlled the game satisfactorily.

After a poor exhibition of Rugby, Southland beat Manawhenua this afternoon by 12 points to 4. The weather was fine, but dull, and the ground in splendid order. During the game there were very few movements to enthuse over, both sides finding difficulty in handling the ball with any degree of cer-

tninity. Several of the Manayvhenua players occupied places to which they were not accustomed, and combination suffered as the result. Southland backs failed to link up, bad handling crippling a number of rushes before they had been effectively launched. The most pronounced feature of the play was the solid defence by each side For the winners tries were scored by McLeod and O’lDriscoll, and Diack kicked two penalty goals.
