PROPOSED NEW ASYLUM SITE.
MARTON DOESN’T WANT IT
Quite unconsciously, Mr. F. R. 11. Brice caused some amusement at the Marion Chamber of Commerce meeting when he suggested Marton as the centre for the new asylum, which the Government intend to erect in the Wellington province.
“I seriously suggest,” added Mr. Brice, amid loud laughter, “that Marton would be an ideal centre, and the institution would be an asset to the townspeople.”
Voices: Are we as bad as all that?
Mv. Brice, smilingly: I don’t suggest that Martonians will swell the list of patients, but the matter of Marton as the centre could be placed before the Government. All eyes were on Mr. Glenn who, in the face of further uproarious laughter, entered a strong protest. "I'll bring any matter before the Government,” he said, “but I’m Mowed if I’ll get up on the floor of the House and ask for an asylum forMarton!” Mr. F. J. Christensen: For Heaven's sake, don’t put it up on Wanganui road. Mr. Brice disagreed with the attitude that had been taken up, but he appreciated the joke when a resolution by Mr. J. A. Bush, that the institution be erected as far away from Marton as possible, was carried unanimously and enthusiastically.
