BOWLING NOTES.

So far during the closed season the committee of the local Bowling Club have done considerable work on their green in preparation for the coming opening. Top-dressing lias been prepared and laid on the green subsequent to the sward being cut, and prior to this a small flock of sheep were grazed on the area, which should also do a certain amount of good to the grass. The croquet court was also topdressed earlier in the year by Mr. Nye, acting under instructions from the Croquet Club Committee. The Committee anticipate providing a good green for members during the coming season.

Local bowlers will be interested to learn that Mr. J. M. Barr, who is at present on a tour abroad, had a day or two with the NeAv Zealand bowlers at St. Enacli Station, who under date 12th July, Mr. Barr says Mrs. Barr and himself arrived at Glasgow about a fortnight previously, and the second night there happened to encounter the N.Z. bonders at St. Enacli Station, who were returning from a match at the famous “Titwood” green, and had quite a lively few minutes with those gentlemen. On the following Sunday the Glasgow Association look the bowlers and ladies for a 60-mile motor run round Loch Lomond, to which Mr. and Mrs. Barr were invited, and spent a nice day. Then they had an invitation to accompany them to Ayr, where the New Zealanders played six rinks and w!on. The trip to Ayr was a most enjoyable affair. They left Glasgow in the morning, about 40 in the party, and on arrival got quite a big reception, after which they were motored through the “Burns” country. The bowlers stood on the “auld brig of Doon” and sang “Ye Banks and Braes.” The scenery around Ayr is most beautiful. Dinner at the Ayr bowling green was provided, and a memu enclosed with Mr. Barr’s letter shows how well the visitors are being treated. The green Aims in perfect condition, but not fast in the sense that Ave know AA T hat fast means. The NeAv Zealanders Avere up against good players there, but they played well, and in the vardon shots Avere superior, and this Avon the game for them. During the journey home Mr. Barr says he was duly initiated as a member of the N.Z. boAvlers, by being decorated Avith their badge, with the usual fun attached to such proceedings. Mr. Barr says the feAV greens he lias seen compare moi’e than favourably Avith our best greens. Greens at Home ha\ r e only six rinks, consequently they are Avider than ours, and Mr. Barr says he is convinced of the advantage over our eight-rink system. Mr. and Mrs. Barr are having a most enjoyable time, and Mr. Barr sends his kind regards to clubinates.
