MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Manawatu County Council met at Sandon on Tuesday, Councillor Wj. E. Barber (presiding). There were also present: Councillors J. M'Kelvie, J. H. Perrett, W. Pearce, D. W. Reid, J. Boyce, and H. H. Hunt. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was dealt with: — From Public Works Department forwarding notices regarding the gazetting of the Tangimoana and Foxton beach roads as main highways.—Received. From Public Works Department requesting a further resolution of the council respecting the future maintenance of Pyke’s road. —Necessary resolution < agreeing to maintain the road passed. From Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., advising that the Public Works Department had granted a £1 for £1 subsidy up to £SOO for Pyke’s road. —Received. Councillors expressed satisfaction that this road was at last to receive attention. From the county clerk, Waitomo County Council, re the proposed formation of a Dominion County Clerks’ Association and requesting that permission be granted Mr. Drew to attend a conference to be held in Wellington on September 26. —Agreed to.

From J. H. Duncan, Rangiotu, requesting permission to erect a petrol pump. —Approved on usual conditions. TREASURER’S STATEMENT. The treasurer reported as. follows: —County fund account debit £11,196/10/1, loan account credit £736/2/5, main highways loan account credit £590/18/1, imprest account credit £36/11/6. The foregoing figures show the position as at the end of July, but since then the debit in the county fund account had been reduced by the receipt of payments from the Highways Board. In regard to the riding accounts the following amounts were available for expenditure: Sandon Riding £283/17/-, Mount Stewart Riding £284/8/-, Waitohi Riding £2Ol 3/3, Rongotea Riding £215/4/10, Carnarvon Riding £4Bl/13/3, Kawa Kawa Riding £2l/4/8, Awahou Riding £505/3/9. TR AMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT The tramway manager reported as follows upon the working of the tramway for the month of July: The chief items of traffic for the month were, grain 134 tons, minerals and manure 187 J tons, general merchandise 54 tons, sheep 15 trucks, timber 2560 super feet, eggs 105 crates, wool 13 bales, and metal 311 trucks. Fares amounted to 14/9. —Received. The accounts show a debit balance of 15/5 for the month’s working.

RATE ROLL ALTERATIONS. The following alterations were made on the rate roll: S. J. Sanson to Mi'S. M. E. Harris, lot 3, sec. 13 Block XV. Rangiotu; Janet Lucas to Henson Bros., pt. see. 270, Carnarvon; James O’Brien to John Patrick Logan and Harry Hazelwood, sec. 65, Block XV. Rangiotu; H. J. and W. S. Lock to H. G. S. Avery, pt. see. 384, Carnarvon; W. J. Smith to Janet L. Smith, lots IA, 18/23, sees. 315/6, Carnarvon; A. E. Jeffries to F. W. Marchant, lots 16, 17, sec. 315, Carnarvon; Est. J. W. Hamlin to Hamlin Bros. pt. lots I, 2 and pt. 2, secs. 46, 44/5, 78/112, Blks. Vn., XI. Te Kawau. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT Mr. W. Berry, traffic inspector, reported as follows: — A fair amount of stock has been found wandering at large, and the various owners have been dealt with, fines ranging from 5/- to 30/having been inflicted. The cases against two lorry drivers for overloading were heard at the last sitting of the Bulls Court, and they were each fined £5 and costs. Por failing to keep to the correct side, of the road they w'ere each fined 20/- and costs. The information for failing to remove the load in excess of their licenses was dismissed. One hawker for hawking without a license was fined 20/-, while one lorry driver was fined 10/- for not having rear vision mirror. The traffic inspector and M. Richardson of the Rangitikei County Council were interviewed re the placing of men on the Bulls bridge on busy days and they decided to place the matter before their council and furnish us with a report on the matter. The report is not yet to hand. The amount for repairs for damage done to protection fence on Awahuri road (£4/14/-) has been paid by the New Zealand Insurance Co., Ltd. Building permits to the value of £2145 have been issued, and fees amounting to £5/5/- collected. Fines inflicted for various eases in the different courts amount to £23 15/- for the past month.—Received. MAIN HIGHWjAY. The County Engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reported as'follows: — Foxton-Shannon. —The formation of the approach road to the new bridge has been completed together with all culverts, drains and fences. A fence has been erected across the road to preserve the formation until metalling operations are complete. Patching and grading has been carried out between Foxton and the Punt. Metal is now' being carted from Shannon for spreading and dumping. The Punt service has been maintained. Whiro'kino. —Metalling and grading had been earned out and the approach fences to the Whii'okino

Bridge had been repaired with material from the old Shannon bridge approach fences. Foxton-llimatangi.—The construction of concrete culverts is now complete, the total of twentynine being laid. Grading continues to be carried out..

Himatangi-Rangiotui — Mj-talling was carried out in the earlier part of the month and grading had been continued throughout. Himatangi-Sanson.—A new culvert had been laid under the road and tram track by Mr. Giles, the road had also been widened at this point. The usual patching and grading had been maintained.

Sanson-Bulls. —'The metal haunches had been graded over to the edge of the bitumen strip. Awahou Riding.— Drays have been engaged ip sanding ICere Kere road. Motuiti road has been graded up. Bowes road and No. 1 Line are now being patched.—Received.
