ILL-TREATMENT OF HORSE.
FINE OF £5 IMPOSED. At the local Police Court yesterday, before Mr. A. Fraser, J.P., George Roberts, a dealer, who had been arrested on Saturday night, was charged with being drunk in charge of a horse and cart, and cruelly ill-treating his horse by working it while it was not in a fit condition, thereby causing it unnecessary suffering.
In giving evidence, Constables Owen and Bell stated that Roberts was found in a drunken state with the horse and cart and was dangerous to other traffic. He was placed under arrest. He had been warned repeatedly about the weak condition of the horse but had taken little notice and on one occasion the horse had collapsed on the road through sheer weakness. The horse was quite a healthy animal but had been starved and neglected. Defendant was ..warned not to work the horse again until its condition improved. He was convicted and lined £5, or in default 14 days’ imprisonment on each charge and allowed 1 week to pay.
