WENT WITH SCOTT.
A POLAR EXPLORER
SURPRISE AT MARTON.
Marton, Oct. 15,
“Can you swim?” asked the chairman of the Rangitikei County Council of a candidate, Mr I. C. Lissold, for the position of metal crushing manager at the Rangitikei River works to-day. “Oh, yes,” was the reply, “I was with Scott at the South Pole.”
This surprise was sprung on members of the Council at the meeting. Mr Lissold had not mentioned in his testimonial that he had been to the South Pole. He modestly admitted that lie was in charge of the transport on the ill-fated journey in 1913.
Mr ClissohJ states that he reached within 65 miles of the goal, when the leader and a few companions went ahead never to return.
Mr Ciissold is now employed on the mechanical staff of the Arapuni hydro-electric works. He was not, however, the successful applicant for the Rangitikei position.
