THE NEW TOWN HALL.

TO BE OPENED BY GOVERNORGENERAL. FREE PICTURE ENTERTAINMENT AND MUNICIPAL BALL. At last night’s Borough Council meeting the Town Hall Committee brought down the following recommendations : That the quotation from D.I.C. Ltd. for the supply of curtains for the new hall for the sum of £43 10/6 be accepted; that Mif A. S. Walsh’s for making wings and "screens (labour only) as specified, for the sum of £l6, be accepted, delivery to be completed in 30 days; that Mr J. E. Tollison’s quotation for supplying tables, as specified, labour and material, for the sum of £36 10/-, be accepted; that Messrs Hutcheson Wilson’s quotation for calico for wings and curtains totalling £26 6/- be accepted; that Mr Harris be offered the sum of £4O for painting scenery as required, and that Mr C. Varnham, of Levin, be offered the sum of £ls to paint one scene and wings to match, as per sketcl!.

'That the opening of the new Town Hall be celebrated as follows :—At 2.15 p.m. official opening, to be followed by an inspection of the hall, and a demonstration of the biograph, etc., a suitable programme to be screened, citizens to be invited as guests of the (Council. At 8 p.m. a Municipal ball to be held, the Councillors personally forming a committee to run it.

Cr. McMurray said that the Town Hall Committee should have supported a British firm in connection with the purchase of a curtain. Cr. McMurray was reminded that he was not allowed to make a statement like that in open council. On the motion of Cr. McMurray it was decided to invite the Gover-nor-General to open the hall. Cr. Rand voted against the motion on the score that the borough could not stand the expense. The recommendations of the committee were adopted.
