BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Reports were read and dealt with as' follows: ; ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT.

The borough road foreman reported as follows: —

Metalling of has been carried out in connection with the No. 3 loan on Johnston and Union Streets and Norbiton and Avenue Roads. Footpaths have been metalled in Lady’s Mile, Robinson, Duncan, Tliynne, Union, Cook, Coley and Russell Streets, and Avenue Road and Rayensworth Place. Loose metal is now being trimmed on these roads and paths with the grader. The wet weather favoured the metalling work, and the metal has settled down nicely. Patching has been done in Harbour Street and Sandon and Avenue Roads and No. 6 Line. A eluvert was also renewed in No. jS Line, and an old drain re-opened.—Ad-opted.' The Poundkeeper reported that 40 head of stock was impounded during the month, and 10s driving fees collected.—-Adopted. WIATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT.

The water works foreman reported that during the month one householder was 1 connected with the high pressure water, and one service extended. The valve between the manholes at the septic tank was repaired, as also was the fence round the pound reserve. —Pumping Station: During the month 985,000 gallons of water were pumped, the maximum current used being 31.5 amps. —Adopted.

HEALTH OFFICER’S REPORT. The Health Officer (Mr J. Huggins) reported that during the last quarter the following infectious diseases were notified: Scarlet fever 1, pneumonia 1, pneumonic influenza 2. Nine complaints were attended to, five nuisances attended to, of which five were abated. Plumbing and drainage work inspected totalled 24,. and other sanitary work 23. Work carried out under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act was as follows: Samples of miik taken, 4; bread weighings, 36; butter do, 12; footstuffs seized or condemned, nil. Food premises inspected were: Butchers, 3; grocers, 3; eating houses, 3; bakehouses, 2. Requisitions for improvements made were: 3 verbal requests for improvements, of which two have already been complied with, while the other will be revisited. Nothing unusual has arisen during the past quarter to necessitate any special investigation re sanitary matters. GAS WORKS. The Gas Manager reported that all the apparatus at the works was in good order. Several services were cleaned out during the past month, and two partly renewed owing to corroded pipes. The demand for coke was good.—Adopted. Or McMurray considered local consumers should be given preference over outside users of coke. During the winter there was not sufficient coke to go round. The matter will be given consideration by the , gas works committee. GENERAL. A complaint was received from Mr H. Berry, in regard to the septic tank outlet, which he said was detrimental to his flaxmilling operations and asked the Council to assist him in extending his water pipes further down the river or extending the sewer outlet. The matter was given full discussion and it was decided to grant Mr Berry £2O to assist him with the extension of his water pipes.

The Foxton Racing Club was granted the use of the old rubbish depot at the pleasure of the Council.

A letter was received from the Shannon Chamber of Commerce, asking the Council’s support in having a temporary span erected at the Shannon Bridge, in lieu of the punt.

The Council did not take any action, as the Highways Board will not subsidise the temporary span. The action of the Works Committee in exchanging the small grader for a larger one, suitable for tractor work, was confirmed. The Town Clerk reported that the balance of the loan for sewerage and water works, would probably be to hand next month. This would leave a surplus in hand of. approximately £350, and the Council was under an obligation to lay a sewer in Wlhyte St. It was decided to put this work in hand immediately conditions were suitable. The road foreman drew attention to the dangerous practice of children throwing fruit peelings on the footpaths, and mentioned that there was a by-law dealing with the matter. It was decided to write to the school committee suggesting ,that the children be warned to desist from the practice.
