OUR RAILWAY TIME-TABLE.

PROTEST AGAINST ALTERATION. At a meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon the proposed alteration of the Foxton-Palmerston North railway time-table, reverting to the early Monday morning train from Foxton and the late Saturday night train from Palmerston North, was discussed, and a motion was passed protesting against same, and asking that the present time-table be adhered to. The Mayor was asked to convey the resolution to the General Manager of Railways, and has written as follows: —

“Dcar.Bir. —I am enclosing copy of resolution (re suggested ajjeralioti of the present time-table of the Palmerston N.-Foxton railway service), passed by -the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, ami endorsed by members of the Borough Council yesterday, I wish to stale that if the now -hcdulo of mr ng is carried into effect practically the whole of the train-travelling community from Foxton to Ratigiolu will he seriously inconvenienced thereby. In former years, when the late train returned from Palmerston N. on Saturday nights, constant complaints were being made of the objectionable language and behaviour of men returning home the worse for liquor by same, thus making it extremely uncomfortable for sober people, especially ladies, to (ravel. Although 0 o'clock closing is generally considered a beneficial measure, yet unfortunately drinking does not cease when the bars close. Re the 7 o’clock (rain on Monday morning from Foxton; and the carriage of perishable'produce. I understand a petition is to be forwarded to you from Motnili and Himitangi dairy farmers, praying for relief. A considerable quantity of eveyni is sent daily from those places to the Dairy Union factory, by train, to Palmerston North. The Monday morning train leaving at 7 o'clock is considered altogether too early , to meet. The position will lie aggravated by the fact that (no train running on Sunday) Saturday night's cream will have to be kept until Monday afternoon’s train, I bits deteriorating very considerably in quality, t believe yon will agree with me that the produce of the country is more important than the interests of a few pleasure-seeker.-. It Ims been urged from Palmerston North as a reason for the suggested time-table that people can go by train to the Beaeli and return early to business on .Monday morning, il has been proved here that nearly all the people from Palmerston N. going to the Beach for week-ends went by mol or ear. A. record was kept of seasiders coining here by train on Saturday nights. Sometimes two or three came, sometimes none at all, and certainly did not warrant late hour work by the railway staff in running the train. I sincerely hope that you will give this matter your kindly consideration. On behalf of the people I (hank you heartily for the excellent railway service you are giving us, arid I rust the present time-table —which gives almost universal satisfaction at this end—will remain in force.”
