PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

A further general meeting of the local Patilolic Society was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening, and despite a special appeal for a larger attendance of the public than hitherto, only about 20 persons were present.

The Mayor Mr Alf. Fraser, presided and stated that a meeting of the executive had been held since the previous general meeting, and certain matters had been decided upon which would be submitted lor approval or otherwise to the meeting. Mr Kellow in presenting the report of the executive, stated that it was decided to hold over malteis connected with the proposed carnival in February, till some lime in January, and in the meantime to inaugurate a system of public giving by placing a collection box in each home in the borough and district. He submitted a sample box to the meeting, which he had obtained from Wellington together with cost of same. In respect to badges for members, he had communicated with the Wellington society, and they were considering the same question, and asked the local society to hold the matter over until they had decided on design, etc. The Rev Mr Raiue moved the adoption of the system of giving outlined by the executive. There were about 400 houses in the borough, and if each house only contributed a minimum of is per month, which was a low estimate, the fund would benefit to the extent of per year.

Other speakers endorsed this method of giving and the scheme was adopted. It was decided to purchase the boxes and the Ladies’ Guild and Giils’ Guild are to be asked to supervise the distributing and quarterly collections, the executive to draw up particulars for putting the scheme into operation. The district to include the borough, Himatangi, Manawatu Heads and Whirokino. It was decided to hold over matters connected with the carnival until January and that the matter of badges be left with the Secretary and Chairman. It was decided that all ladies who undertake collecting donations become honorary membeis and receive a badge.

Those present were urged to enrol members in order to create a wider interest in the society’s affairs.
