LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The usual monthly meeting of the library committee will be held in the Council Chambers on Monday, 14th December, 1914, at 7 p.m. Business: general. There was a good attendance at the Municipal pictures on Saturday evening and judging by the applause that was given showed that the programme screened was well appreciated. The general election and licensing returns will be displayed outside the Herald office on Thursday night. We have made arrangements to get the returns with the least possible delay.

Mr W. H. D'ield, the Reform candidate, will address the electors in the Town Hall at 8 o’clock this evening. The Mayor will occupy the chair. The inspector asks us to warn boys against throwing stones at the street lamps. Considerable damage has been done in this connection of late. There is a severe penalty for such wrong-doing, and a timely warning should be a sufficient deterrent.

The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council will be held in the Council Chambers on Monday, i4th December, at 7.30 p.m. Business ; Notice of motion by Councillor Henderson that the following resolution passed on Nov. Qtb, 1914, be resciued, viz., “That is view of the danger of grass fires, the roads be thrown open for the grazing of stock between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. for three months from date,’’ and general. A hemiplegic patient, Harry Hallinau by name, who has been in the Napier hospital for the last two years with the lower half of his body completely paralysed, is at present rejoicing at the results of the recent earthquake. The shock so affected his nervous system (says the Daily Telegraph) that he has recovered the partial use of the leg which was the more seriously afflicted of the two. After having been helpless for two years, the patient’s condition is such as to give him unbounded pleasure. The case is an interesting one, and Dr Gilray and his staff are watching it closely. The improvement may be only temporary. but there are taint chances that it may continue. At the Royal last night, considerable interest was taken in the war picture, “Called to the Front,” which was screened as the star item. The picture was in the form of a drama, telling the story of a young Englishman sent on secret service to Russia, carrying despatches. The adventures through which he passes are interwoven with separate battle scenes on land and naval views, and the story is completed with his return in a wounded and exhausted condition after having successfully fulfilled his mission. The programme included another lengthy and interesting drama, a good scenic, and a couple of laughterraising comics. This programme will be repeated to-night.

A man named Alfred Steuberg was fined 203 at Palmerston on Saturday, for assaulting Mr W. Thomson at a public meeting. The Magistrate said It Was as well for the public to know that nobody could interfere in a public meeting. It it had been a private meeting the case might be somewhat overlooked, but in a public meeting it was a dangerous matter, especially when feeling was running high. It might have led to the public taking sides in a general riot.
