SILVER IN MANAWATU GORGE.
On Tuesday Messrs Thompson and party, who have been out prospecting for twelve months, discovered a silver lode in the Manawatu Gorge. They are so pleased with the prospects that they have pegged off a claim of 150 acres. A company is being formed in Masterton, it is understood, to have the ground thoroughly prospacted, and if payable, worked. The scene of the discovery is about five miles from Ashhurst, lying in the rocks above the road. It is thickly bushed and there is a creek right through the claim. The silver was discovered in a lode and an assay made on behalf of Thompson and party at the Thames yielded £2 to the ton. It is stated that stone only giving X2S to the ton has been worked at a profit in Australia. Silver, copper and hematite have previously been found in the Gorge and 20 years ago indications of gold were found.
