The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, October 29, 1908. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Further additions are made to the Himatangi stock sale list. Messrs Millar and Giorgi advertise correct clothes for men and boys. Holiday railway excursion tickets for the King’s Birthday are advertised elsewhere in this issue. The annual school examinations take place to-morrow. A squad of boys were busy yesterday cleaning the outer walls of the school building.

Mr Whiting, nurseryman, of Palmerston North, will be in Foxton to-morrow, and may be consulted at the office of Mr P. H. RaeHoward, local agent. A council meeting of the local Chamber of. Commerce will be held this evening, for the purpose of discussing harbour matters and general. A meeting of the Foxton Borough library Committee will be held in the Council Chambers on Monday next, at 7.30 p.m. Business : Resignation of librarian and consideration of librarian’s report and general. A white frost yesterday morning played havoc with the kitchen gardens in this district. Early potatoes, with flowering tops, were mercilessly cut back, and what were flourshing tomato plants of the previous day, ■ are now withered and drooping. Wellsheltered crops did uot suffer so badly, but the majority of the potato crops are set back fully three weeks.

The elections in connection with the Manawalu Count}’ Council take place on Wednesday, November nth. Nominations close on Wednesday, November 4UI. The time for receiving nominations for the flax-spreading competition at the Foxton Sports has been extended until Thursday, November sth, at 8 p.m. The Secretary of the Foxton Athletic Club desires to acknowledge receipt of donations of one guinea each from Messrs P. M. Page and J. K, Hornblow. Mr J. H. Yerex, of the Rex Studio, has promised a handsome framed enlargement of the winner, as first prize for the Baby Show at the Foxton Athletic Club’s sports meeting, to be held on the King’s Birthday. A nolle prosequi has been entered in the case of the Stationmaster Kendall, charged with manslaughter in connection with the Braybrook railway disaster.

In connection with the local option vole in Dunedin, a “corner” in cabs has been created by “the trade” securing all the public conveyances for polling day. The schooner Lady Kensington, bound for Trinidad, was seized by the Venezuelan officials while lying becalmed off the Venezuelan coast. The passengers and the crew were imprisoned. Apparently the seizure is made in pursuance of a decree of President Castro, practically prohibiting trade between Venezuela and Trinidad. The British Minister at Caracasa is investigating the matter.

The Secretary ot the local Horticultural and Industrial Association has received a letter from Mr Mayo, nurseryman, of Palmerston N., consenting to officiate as judge ot cut flowers at the show to be held on 2nd and 3rd December, also donating a special prize of a box of dessert peaches. Mr C. Mayo, of Feilding, has consented to act as judge for fruit and vegetables, MrV. Fitzherbert, of Devin, of poultry ; Mr J. Nash, Palmerston N., dairy produce; Mr Yerex, amateur photography.

Further evidence of the presence in Wanganui of an inceudiarist was discovered on Tuesday morning at the Infant School, where a quantity of paper and rubbish had been placed in the corner of the shelter shed, which is underneath the school building. The paper had burned out without setting fire to the buildings, which were only scorched a little where the incendiary had been at work. This makes the fifth incendiary t act within a fortnight. The Wellington price tor top brands of butter is Is 3d per lb, or is o}4d per lb wholesale. This price, it is stated, may be advanced in view of the high prices ruling for butter on the London market, where best Danish is bringing 130 s. The first New Zealand shipment, now within a fortnight of London, would, were it at Home to-day, bring 128 s, with Danish at the above quotation. If the London price keeps up the local price, it is stated, will rise, and the position will be more acute by the decrease in the Australian production. Inquiries made at Dunedin regarding the prospects of the coming wool season show that a basis of 3d per lb for a good standard of fleece will be established in the ensuing sales, meaning reduction of something like two millions sterling in the growers’ returns throughout the Dominion. This view is shared by the leading selling broker and the leading buyer broker. As showing that the N. Z. farmer has not all his eggs in one basket, one broker pointed to the fact that there has been no fall in the price of stock or land in sympathy with the decline in the wool market. It will be remembered that about twelve months ago, through an accident at Messrs Ross and Son’s rope works, Foxton, Miss Adeline Carroll, a girl of 15 years of age, lost her right arm. Owing to the distressing circumstances ot the case, the girl having been the main support of her mother, who has a large family of young children and an invalid husband to maintain, several friends have circulated subscription lists, with the result that through the generosity ot flaxmill employers and employees throughout the district a fairly large sum has been collected, which it is hoped will be augmented by sums yet to come in. If funds permit it is proposed to buy a house for the family. Mr John Kennard, of Tokomaru, will be pleased to receive subscriptions from anyone who cares to assist in this very deserving case. In this connection the promoters desire to thank those who have subscribed to the fund, and especially those workmen who have so readily responded to the appeal.
