SCHOOL CLASSIFICATION.

At Thursday night’s meeting of the School Committee, the headmaster’s report dealt with the question of school classification as follows :

“ In view of the altered regulations (gazetted in April of this year) lor the classification and examination of pupils in schools, I would most respectfully ask the Committee to authorise me to get one hundred of the enclosed notices printed and forwarded to parents of children attending this school. The notice has been fixed for nearly a month on the front door of the school, and the children’s attention called thereto, but so far without any appreciable effect. The altered conditions give head teachers still greater freedom in the examination and classification of their pupils, inasmuch as hitheito they examined pupils of Std. I. to Std. V., they have now to examine the whole school, Std. VI. included, and the annual examination must be conducted by the head teacher in November or December. Now Mr Braike pays an inspection visit on the 30th hist., and if there be any children wishing to attend a High School, or if there be any parents dissatisfied with the headmaster’s classification, they should at once make an application for their children to become candidates for certificates of competency. Any parent of any child of school age (i.e., five years), or on the roll of any school has this one opportunity open to him, and he should know it. I enclose herewith a copy of the notice affixed to the school door, and respectfully ask that each parent be supplied with a copy.” The notice referred to reads as follows :

“ Notice. —Inspection visit; October 30th, 1908. The parent of any child of school age, or on the roll of any school, who wishes such child to obtain a certificate of competeucy, must give notice of his desire in writing to the head teacher on or before October 27th, 1908. The notice must state on which of the following grounds the parent wishes such certificate to be granted:—1. That he is seeking employment in the public service or elsewhere. 2. That he wishes to enter a secondary school. 3. That he is under 14 years of age, and that his parents wish to obtain from him a certificate of exemption. 4. That the parent of any child is not satisfied with the classification of such - child in the school. The head teacher of the Foxton State School wishes by this notice to make it clear to parents that the Inspector’s visit on the 30th October inst. presents their only opportunity under the Act. —Gazette, April 2, 1908.”
