WHITEBAIT.
Mr Lazarette, a local fisherman, informed us yesterday that up to this time last year he and his fishermen had caught whitebait to the value of but so far this
season he had been unable to secure worth. The only reason he could give for the scarcity was the recent frosts. He said this opinion was also held by the Maoris. Mr Tazarelte indignantly protested that whitebait was being sold of an inferior kind both in Wellington and Palmerston, and labelled “ Foxton whitebait!” He argues that such misleading notices in shop windows are calculated to do much harm to the local whitebait industry. Mr Tazarette did not know where the whitebait at present being marketed came from, but speculated either the Auckland province or the freezing chamber. He is anxious that the public of Wellington and Palmerston should know that up to the present no whitebait in sufficient marketable quantity has been secured in the Manawatu.
