Swallows and the Crops.
The British " Journal of Agriculture" states that the continued decrease in the number of swallows and martins has become a cause of serious anxiety to agricultural experts. The regular recurrence of hop blights, and their alarmingly increased intensity, is attributed to the decrease in these birds. Formerly, a serious attack of hop flies only occurred once in three or four years, but now it is a grievous annual visitation* This diminution in numbers is attributed to two , causes, the one being the great *~ slaughter of these birds which now takes place in the South of Europe during the annual migration from Africa to Northern Europe, and the other the great increase in house sparrows, which results in driving the swallow from their accustomed nesting places.
