There recently died in Paris M. Rossignol, a member of the Institute of Inscriptions and Belles Lettr^s. He bad attained 'th[e |gr/at /age -of eighty-nine, and was "a singular "and eccentric character. ..By his will he bequeathed the whole of his property to the City of Earis£ »As; |iv£«hin a very modest madder 'in s a«pobriy furnished apartment, it was not expected that his : legacy wdtild amount to much, but on. his apartment beiifg, searched I- there was fonnd { ip 'an* «e»id chest of drawers a num^epof wd^n socks, each making a : sdrt <rtbag, the bag being tie"d at s the I tdp ; wifeh string and neatly ticjjejjedj Each of these bags contained^ sjiares, bank notes, or gold, the wfiole^ amounting to about 200^000 i cancel. .Many of the notes were, the. five frano nptes issued during the war of 1870.
